all about me
All throughout my childhood all I wanted to do was play sport, I was quite literally sports mad. Although I enjoyed all kinds of sport, including Tennis and Cricket, it was Football which became my priority sport. As a youth I went quite a long way from playing for my local team New Inn to representing Welsh Schools U19. The journey saw me also represent my county, Gwent, and play for League of Wales' side Cwmbran Towns youth team.
Despite my love of sports it has been my interest in computing and particularly the internet which took me to university and indeed to where I am now. I developed this interest in computing in school where projects developed for GCSE's and A-Levels made my mind up that computing was what I wanted a career in.
Like a lot of people I enjoyed the internet and making websites and showcasing them to others was a thrill. I decided to study Internet Technology at Swansea University to enhance my skills and with the hope that it would lead to a career in building Internet based systems. Throughout my studies I received a plethora of skills and knowledge on a vast array of programming languages and technologies. With regards to Internet systems I learnt many things including the following:
- The basics of Linux including setting up and configuring a web server.
- XHTML, CSS and Web Standards.
- PHP
- MySQL
- ASP.NET (C#)
- Java RMI
Having graduated on the 20th July with a grade 2:2. I seeked employment in web development.
I was fortunate enough to get a job as a web developer in July 2006 for Hughes Media in the beautiful teme valley in Worcestershire. From the moment I started I have enhanced my skills and learnt new technologies such as the following:
- Smarty templating engine
- PEAR DB as well as other popular PEAR modules.
- Version control using subversion.
- Basics of unit testing using Simple Test
- Basics of Ajax and an improved understanding of Javascript.
- Web security.
- Systems administration.
As well as the technical skills my web development role has also improved my time management and workload organisation.
